It is that time of an IPL season when the table begins to bunch up, momentum swings sharply, and every result carries added weight. Gujarat Titans appear to be timing their surge well, with two wins on the trot, including a statement home victory over the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their next test comes against table-toppers Punjab Kings, who will be keen to bounce back after their first defeat of the season.GT's recent upswing has been underpinned as much by balance as by results. The inclusion of Jason Holder has given them a more rounded look, plugging gaps with both bat and ball while allowing their primary bowlers clearer roles. That clarity was evident against RCB, where they were disciplined with the ball and largely clinical in the chase, despite a few setbacks, never allowing the game to drift.Their batting, however, remains top-heavy, with the top three driving most of the output through a measured but assertive approach. The middle order has been comparatively underwhelming - Shahrukh Khan and Washington Sundar, in particular, have struggled for impact - but the presence of Holder, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan has provided a safety net that has masked those shortcomings.Punjab Kings, on the other hand, arrive at this fixture with their first real wobble of the season. After a near-flawless start, their defeat exposed issues less to do with personnel and more with execution, particularly with the ball in high-scoring conditions. They were unable to close out phases despite having control at different points, a concern Shreyas Iyer acknowledged after the game.Their first defeat also brought the bowling under sharper focus. While Lockie Ferguson, in his first game of the season, endured an expensive outing, Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen - who have otherwise led the attack - also went for runs as execution dipped at key moments. Against a GT side finding its rhythm at the right time, PBKS will need tighter control across phases to ensure the second half of their season mirrors the first. What to expect: The game will be played on Pitch No. 5 - a black soil wicket - which should make it a slightly more balanced contest between batters and bowlers. The previous game played on this pitch was the GT vs MI match, in which Tilak Varma's 101 took Mumbai to 199 before they bowled GT out for 100. A total in the 180-190 range could prove challenging for the chasing side.Injuries/unavailability: Prasidh Krishna has not featured in the GT lineup for the last few matches. Regarding his absence, Aashish Kapoor, GT's assistant coach, explained that he "was missing his lengths quite a bit in a few games. So, we thought it's better to give him a break - he works on it and then get him back into the side rather than he losing confidence game after game." GT is likely to go in with an unchanged side.Tactics & Matchups: Kagiso Rabada has a favourable match-up against Prabhsimran Singh, having dismissed him twice in 12 deliveries. Mohammed Siraj, Rashid Khan, Jason Holder and Washington Sundar are all useful options against Shreyas Iyer, who has been dismissed twice each by these four bowlers. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis has been dismissed five times by Rashid Khan and twice by Sundar, bringing the spinners into play should the Australian be at the crease.Injuries/unavailability: Shashank Singh, recovering from a hamstring injury, is set to miss this game too. Trevor Gonsalves, PBKS' assistant bowling coach, said he's likely to be available for the team's match against SRH on May 6. Meanwhile, PBKS are likely to stick to the same side.Tactics & Matchups: Yuzvendra Chahal has a favourable match-up against Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, having dismissed them four times and three times respectively. Marcus Stoinis has also dismissed Jos Buttler thrice in 13 innings and could be an useful option against the England batter.- Punjab Kings have the best run-rate among all teams in the Powerplay, having scored at 12.40 runs per over. Gujarat Titans have a middling 9.75 run-rate in the first six overs, placing them sixth on this list.- GT's middle-order batters (No.4 to 8) have the least runs (425), second lowest average (22.36) and the second lowest strike rate (135.78) among all teams in this IPL. They've also hit the least number of sixes (13)."Our batting approach, whether it's a brown soil, red soil, green soil, any soil, it's proper cricket up front. So our batsmen, Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Buttler, will look to play proper normal cricket. It's not that we are looking to score 120 runs like other teams in the first six overs. We want to play normal cricket, get to 60-70-80 runs, whatever we can, and then see what foundation we play and where we can go from there" - Aashish Kapoor, GT assistant coach.
