Rory McIlroy Hit With Troubling Personal News Before Masters

Rory McIlroy now faces a stream of potentially embarrassing news about his personal life from a new book. McIlroy begins his attempt to become only the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters on Thursday.

The details, which surfaced just days before the Masters, raise new questions about how much of a distraction the situation could become for McIlroy this week. According to a new report by the Daily Mail newspaper, the book allegedly reveals “savage details about cheating rumors… mortifying text messages… and a secret steamy weekend.”

The new biography of McIlroy, titled Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar was released on March 31 and is authored by Alan Shipnuck. The author’s previous book, a biography of three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson, contained revelations about Mickelson’s gambling habit and debts as well as other embarrassing personal details.

Partly because of the revelations in the Mickelson book, McIlroy refused to cooperate with Shipnuck for the new Rory book, the author told The Irish Times. Shipnuck went ahead with the book anyway, revealing details about his 2024 divorce filing against his wife of seven years at the time, Erica Stoll.

Why McIlroy Changed Mind About Divorce

But McIlroy and Stoll called off the divorce proceedings just one month later. According to the Mail report, McIlroy said at the time that “Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together.” McIlroy later described the divorce drama as a “wake up call,” as quoted by the Mail.

“Shipnuck draws parallels between McIlroy and Woods, whose multiple affairs were exposed in 2009 after he crashed his car into a fire hydrant outside his home during Thanksgiving weekend,” Mail reporters Daniel Bantz and Jack Bezants wrote in the Monday report.

But they also make clear that, according to Shipnuck’s book, “accusations of that extent have never been leveled at McIlroy.”

The book, however, goes into detail about McIlroy’s seemingly platonic relationship with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis.

“Shipnuck’s book says that people close to McIlroy and Balionis insist they were never romantically involved but that when he started researching for his book, 90 percent of questions he was asked were about the pair,” the Mail reported.

An earlier Daily Mail report from 2024 said that McIlroy and Balionis had become the “talk of the links” due to what appeared to be their unusually close friendship.

Book Explains Root of McIlroy Rumors

Though it referred to “mortifying text messages,” the Mail report failed to deliver on reporting what the contents of the alleged messages may have been, other than “group chats between staffers” that were “full of ‘winking emojis’ and brazen comments about the ‘smitten’ golfing superstar.”

Those messages were from 2013 when McIlroy became engaged to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, an engagement that lasted just five months. According to the book, as cited in a New York Post report, the breakup was caused by McIlroy’s “reckless” behavior in openly pursuing a relationship with Stoll while still engaged to Wozniacki.

But there is no evidence, according to the Mail report on Shipnuck’s book, that McIlroy was actually unfaithful to Wozniacki while pursuing Stoll.
