The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has backed the possible inclusion of Andre Ayew in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the veteran forward’s experience could be invaluable to the Black Stars.Speaking on Adom TV’s Fire for Fire programme, the minister addressed ongoing discussions surrounding reports that Ayew could receive a national team call-up ahead of the tournament. The former Ghana captain remains one of the most debated figures among supporters, with many fans believing the 36-year-old is past his best and should not be part of the squad.Others, however, feel his leadership and experience could play a crucial role for the team on football’s biggest stage.Benjamin Asare recounts reaction to Austria’s 5-1 victory over GhanaKofi Adams appeared to side with the latter view, describing Ayew as one of Ghana’s greatest players and someone who still has a lot to offer the national team.“Dede is one of our great players. I have no doubt about seeing him at the World Cup because even older players than Dede go to the World Cup,” he said. The minister added that if the Black Stars coach believes Ayew is fit and capable of contributing positively, there should be no issue with his inclusion.“I just want results and I believe that if you have someone like Dede, it is like having an additional player-coach on the team,” Adams stated. He further noted that although selection decisions remain entirely in the hands of the coach, he personally sees no problem with Ayew being part of Ghana’s World Cup plans."I don’t think it’s a bad idea if Dede is named in the World Cup squad. I don’t know the coach’s plan or strategy, but if I were a coach and I had a player with the caliber of Dede, then why not?" he quizzed.FKA/AEGhana relay coach urges government to invest in the nation’s rising athletes
