The round of 32 began on Sunday (28 June) with Canada beating South Africa 1-0 at the Los Angeles Stadium in a match-up of two teams appearing in the knockouts for the first time.

Five-time champions Brazil and Japan will kick off the second day of the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32 on Monday (27 June) in what has shaped up to be a highly intriguing game of football in Houston.

Brazil have arrived at the knockout phase as Group C winners with comfortable victories over Haiti and Scotland, coupled with a draw with Morocco.

Japan lived up to their pre-tournament dark horses billing, finishing runners-up in Group F behind the Netherlands. The Samurai Blue also pummeled Tunisia 4-0 before capping the first round with a draw to Sweden.

The last time Brazil and Japan met on the World Cup stage was at Germany 2006, where the Selecao outclassed the Japanese 4-1. But Japan have vastly improved in the two decades since, defeating Brazil 3-2 in a home friendly last fall for their first-ever win over the South Americans at the full international level.

The winners will face either Cote d’Ivoire or Norway in New York/New Jersey on 5 July.

Germany will be favoured against Paraguay, who were seventh of the eight third-place teams to progress to the last 32.

These two clashed once before at the World Cup, back at Korea/Japan 2002 where the four-time champions prevailed in the round of 16 en route to the final.

The Netherlands and Morocco are set to square off in a showdown in Monterrey to round out the day.

The Oranje, three-time World Cup runners-up, have yet to lose against African sides in six previous World Cup games, while Morocco will be looking to emulate their run to the semi-finals from Qatar 2022.

The teams locked horns at the last World Cup on North American soil in 1994, when the Dutch won a first-round affair - with their current manager Ronald Koeman starting the match.

Whoever comes out ahead in this tie will be a handful for co-hosts Canada or South Africa, who await in the last 16.
