Gary Neville has explained the significance behind Manchester United’s key victory over Chelsea under former Red Devils and England teammate Michael Carrick.

The 51-year-old Sky Sports pundit spoke on his podcast after Manchester United’s Premier League encounter with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Chelsea produced a strong performance against United at the weekend, but Red Devils interim boss Michael Carrick engineered a surprise 1-0 Premier League win.

The Red Devils stunned the Blues ahead of half-time after Matheus Cunha opened the scoring — and eventual winner — from a superb Bruno Fernandes assist.

Gary Neville says Michael Carrick dodged a bullet with Man Utd’s defence against Chelsea

Chelsea have lost their last four Premier League matches under Liam Rosenior after Michael Carrick’s men secured a major boost towards their top-four ambitions this season.

Speaking on the Blues’ run of form, Gary Neville said on his Sky Sports show: “They [Chelsea] look like they’re beaten.

“Every time you watch them, they’re not in a good vein of form at all. So, yeah, that was a bad weekend for Chelsea. A really bad weekend.”

United legend Neville said it was a “really bad situation” for Chelsea to not capitalise on the Red Devils’ loss to Leeds United and now playing with a makeshift defence.

“After United getting beaten by Leeds on Monday, Chelsea must be thinking like, ‘Let’s go and win,” he added on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“Now you think United’s centre-back and back four, you [must be] thinking, ‘We’ve got a real chance.’ So, to not score a goal is a very, you know, really bad situation.”

Carrick had to contend with several key United first-team players being absent for the Stamford Bridge visit, which limited his defensive options on Saturday evening.

The 44-year-old United interim boss had to deploy Ayden Heaven alongside makeshift centre-back Noussair Mazraoui for the 1-0 win over Chelsea.

“But, yeah, Michael Carrick and Manchester United, I think that was a big response that from a really difficult Monday night football against Leeds, when Leeds, I think, outplayed Manchester United,” Neville continued.

“I think it’s a really good response.”
