The match was overshadowed by confirmation from the President that he asked Fifa boss Gianni Infantino to review striker Folarin Balogun’s red card.

Fifa rules state a straight red card, which Balogun was shown against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Round-of-32 win, triggers a one-match ban and can’t be appealed by the player’s team.

The ban was subsequently suspended for a year after lobbying from the Trump administration, prompting the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) to release a statement where it said the association was “astonished” by the decision.

Belgian captain Youri Tielemans told broadcaster RTBF media after the match that the decision around the red card fired his team up.

“We told ourselves we needed to do our talking on the pitch. That’s what we did today. I’m very proud of the team,” Tielemans said.

The RBFA has since updated its statement on Balogun’s red card, where it has said the association will remain “committed to advocating for a review of the current Fifa regulations and their application”.

“The RBFA is proud of the way the Red Devils responded on the pitch,” the updated statement read.

“At the same time, the RBFA will continue to pursue the ongoing Fifa matter off the pitch.

“The RBFA firmly believes that international football is best served by a disciplinary and governance framework that fully upholds the principles of legal certainty, transparency, equal treatment and fair play.

“Clear procedures, respect for the rights of defence and the consistent application of the regulations are essential to maintaining the confidence of member associations, coaches, players, supporters and all other stakeholders in our sport.”

The President’s dancing to the ′70s song went viral prior to the 2024 election, while the tune has become associated with his rallies.

After the death of the Village People’s Victor Willis, Trump claimed in a tribute to the singer that he had made the song a “monster hit again”.

Belgium will play Spain in the quarter-finals on July 11 at 7am NZT.
