GCB Bank ready to defend Business Olympics crown for ninth time

GCB Bank is targeting a ninth consecutive championship at the Business Olympics, with the reigning champions confident of maintaining their dominance when this year’s competition comes off on Saturday, September 26.

The bank has won the overall title for eight consecutive editions, and its Sports Committee says it is prepared to defend the crown despite spending only three days on intensive preparations for this year’s event.

Executive Member of the GCB Bank Sports Committee, Ruth Nana Ama Asamoah, said the team’s experience from previous competitions has given it the confidence to approach the event without extensive preparation.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, September 25, she said the team had been assembled at the bank’s training school for a three-day camping session ahead of the competition.

“We don’t even prepare very much. We only use three days to prepare because it’s just like now, we are just coming to have fun,” she said.

According to Asamoah, GCB Bank’s athletes have been in camp from Wednesday to Friday as the team puts the final touches to its preparations.

She said the bank’s impressive record at the Business Olympics has also strengthened the team’s belief that it can retain the title.

“We’ve been the reigning champion. Unless we say we are tired, unless we say we will not come, that is when we are going to remove our hat and give it to another company,” she stated.

GCB Bank’s bid for a ninth straight title comes as other participating companies prepare to challenge its long-standing dominance.

GCB Bank reinforced its dominance at the 2025 edition by bagging 14 medals in total — eight gold, four silver and two bronze — to emerge as the overall champions of Ghana’s biggest corporate sporting festival.

Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), which won three medals at last year’s competition, has already declared its intention to challenge GCB Bank for overall honours this year. UMB says it will participate in all sporting disciplines with the aim of finishing top of the medal table.

The 2026 Citi Business Olympics will bring together corporate organisations for a day of competition, networking and team-building activities under the theme, “Bridging the Gap in Our Corporate World Through Sports.”

The competition will feature disciplines including seven-a-side football, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, swimming, tug of war, sack race, draughts, chess, scrabble, lime and spoon, and the CEO’s Challenge.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, at the Eden Heights Sports Complex, with activities expected to begin at 8:00 a.m.
