Sumit Nagal advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s singles tennis competition at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on September 30. Currently ranked 249th in the ATP rankings and having once peaked at number 68 globally, Nagal defeated Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin 6-3, 6-2.Nagal’s next opponent will be China’s Wu Yibing, the silver medalist from the 2018 Asian Games, presenting a challenging match ahead.In another tennis singles match, India’s Dhakshineswar Suresh was eliminated after a defeat by Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin.In sports climbing, Deepu Mallesh set a new national record four times in the men’s speed qualification event to reach the quarterfinals. He recorded a time of 5.09 seconds, finishing 11th out of 16 competitors. His previous national record was 5.39 seconds, established in April during the Asian Championships.In canoe slalom, Pradhyumna Singh Rathod finished sixth in the men’s kayak single final with a time of 125.21 seconds. Pallavi Jagtap was disqualified from the women’s canoe single final.The Indian men’s compound archery team defeated South Korea 236-229 in the semifinals and will face China in the final. The team comprised Sahil Jadhav, Kushal Dalal, and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru, aiming for a third consecutive compound archery medal.Earlier, the Indian women’s compound archery team made up of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, and Prithika Pradeep won gold by beating China 238-234. This victory marked Jyothi’s fourth Asian Games gold and the first for Chikitha and Prithika.Later, archers Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav secured gold in the compound mixed team event after a shoot-off victory over South Korea. Their win also earned India a qualification quota for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.In boxing, Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medalist Priya Ghanghas secured a bronze medal, losing to China’s Yang Chengyu in the semifinal of the women’s 60 kg category.In shooting, Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won gold in the mixed trap team event, setting a new Asian Games record of 34, surpassing the previous mark of 30 set by Qatar earlier this year. Qatar took silver with a score of 32, while China claimed bronze with 23. This is India’s first-ever gold in the trap mixed team event.This victory represents India’s ninth gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 and the third on September 30, bringing the nation’s overall medal tally to 56, including nine golds, 21 silvers, and 26 bronzes. Additionally, it marks the 15th medal earned by Indian shooters, comprising three golds, eight silvers, and four bronzes.
