And the club are set to complete their first deal with Atlanta midfielder Ederson set to undergo a medical. United have agreed a £35million deal and the Brazilian is set to sign a four-year contract with the option of an extra year.

Ederson is expected to arrive as one of at least two new central midfielders, boosting an area where there was a notable lack of depth last season. The 26-year-old will arrive off the back of a World Cup campaign with Brazil, having been called up as a replacement for the injured Wesley just days before the tournament in North America.

The Reds are also interested in Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, who has attracted two offers from Manchester City. The 23-year-old is likely to feature prominently for England this summer as the tug-of-war for his signature intensifies.

A more realistic option for the Reds is Portugal and West Ham United star Mateus Feranandes, who will be easier to attain after the Hammers' relegation to the Championship.
