Star India batter to miss ODI series against Afghanistan

India have been forced to make a change in the squad for the ODI series against Afghanistan due to injury. Star batter Virat Kohli has been forced out of the series because of a hamstring injury.

On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal will replace Kohli. A mainstay in India’s Test line-up, Jaiswal has only played four ODIs so far.

"With Virat at this point, it's just been less than a week since he injured himself in the [IPL] finals," India's chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar said.

"We don't know the timelines yet," Agarkar said. "But it looks like he might be fit for that England one-day series. It's not a definitive answer, so don't hold me to it. I haven't had a clear timeline from the physio yet."

Afghanistan are set to play a three-match ODI series in India, starting June 13. The series will mark a busy white-ball schedule for Team India.

The 37-year-old Kohli has retired from Tests and T20Is and currently plays only in the ODI format in international cricket. He has made his ambition of playing the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2017 clear. However, Kohli picked up a hamstring injury during the Indian Premier League final late last month.

Though the BCCI has not made clear the comeback timeline for Kohli, there is a possibility that he will miss the ODI series against England, scheduled in July, as well.
