Vozinha: The Goalkeeper Who Started at 25 and Stunned Spain at 40

Rabat – Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha threw himself in front of shots from some of Europe’s biggest stars, frustrating the reigning European champions and helping secure a historic goalless draw that instantly became one of the highlight stories of this year’s tournament.

The emotional scenes after the final whistle revealed that this was about far more than football, and that took the internet by storm.

The 40-year-old broke down in tears following a player-of-the-match display that introduced millions to one of the World Cup’s most remarkable journeys.

“I worked my whole life for this moment,” Vozinha said in a press statement afterward. “I thought about leaving football, but I continued because of this dream.”

Born Josimar José Evora Dias in São Vicente, Cape Verde, the goalkeeper is better known by the nickname “Vozinha,” a Portuguese word meaning “little granny” – a name given to him by his grandparents, who largely raised him when his father served in the military, and his mother worked.

After the match, he admitted that thoughts of them flooded back during the emotional post-game scenes.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents,” he said. “They were everything for me.”

He also shared that his mother was unable to attend the match because visa procedures and costs prevented her from traveling in time for the World Cup.

Unlike many players arriving at the tournament from Europe’s biggest Clubs, Vozinha’s path to the big stage was anything but glamorous.

He only began playing professionally at the age of 25 and spent years moving between lesser-known clubs across Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal. Today, he plays for Portuguese second-division side Chaves.

Cape Verde’s World Cup story itself is filled with unlikely twists.

Defender Roberto Lopes, another member of the side that stunned Spain, was reportedly first contacted by the national team through LinkedIn. Believing the original message was spam, he ignored it before eventually receiving another invitation months later in English.

Now, the two players have become symbols of one of the tournament’s early underdog stories.

For many neutral fans, the result was already one of the shocks of the World Cup.

For Vozinha, it was even bigger: proof that a dream delayed is not always a dream denied.
