Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion is set for an early departure from the ongoing 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Japan following the death of her husband on Monday, Sept. 21, due to cancer.

An emotional Carrion, a longtime leader of the country’s gymnastics body, disclosed the heartbreaking news, saying she would cut short her presence in the Asian Games and take a flight home to be with her late husband.

“If you don't see me, I'm out. I'm going home today. I am supposed to be here all the time, but I cannot because my husband just died today with cancer, so I'm flying back

tonight,” said Carrion in her interview with a member of the POC Media Pool.

Carrion sent her athletes best wishes and left a big request: win it for her.

“I wish them all luck. I told them to win a medal for me,” she concluded. “Thank you so much, that’s my message for you, my colleague in sports who I loved very much.”

Carrion leaves the Japanese soil with inspired men’s and women’s squads composed of Carlos and Eldrew Yulo, Zachary Nuñez, Ace De Leon, Miguel Besana, Haylee Garcia, Kylee Kvamme, Lauren Supnet, Chiara Andre, and Levi Jung Ruivivar.

All of them hope to deliver another medal, perhaps the elusive gymnastics gold, for the Philippines which, so far, has one bronze from the women’s soft tennis team.
