Marcus Rashford: Teddy Sheringham doesn’t rule out shock summer transfer

0
Marcus Rashford's Manchester United future is already one of the headline stories of the summer, with the forward in limbo about where he will be playing his football next season. With Barcelonanot willing to pay the agreed fee that would have made his loan deal a permanent one at the end of the campaign, the Spanish giants have left Rashford guessing whether they will be re-negotiating with United to keep him in Catalonia.

It is believed the La Liga champions are angling for another loan deal for Rashford, who enjoyed a fine season with Barcelona and who were expected to pull the trigger on the permanent transfer. However, Rashford is now set to return to Manchester after the World Cup, whilst his future is sorted out in the background.

Rival deal on the table?

Whilst Rashford will be reporting back to Carrington at the end of the summer tournament, it remains unlikely there will be a truce between Manchester United and the player that would see him continue at Old Trafford. Too much water has passed under the bridge and INEOS were banking on removing his mammoth wage packet from the current bill and finally cutting ties with the academy graduate.

The Peoples Person has relayed rumours of a switch to a Premier League club should Barcelona not get something agreed with United and other European sides set their sights elsewhere. As relayed by the Mirror, former United striker Teddy Sheringham has spoken on the situation and did not rule out Rashford making one of the most shocking transfers of all time.

Sheringham spoke on the possibility of Rashford signing for arch rivals Liverpool and appeared to give the green light should the England man decide to take the plunge.

"Marcus Rashford to Liverpool would feel like the ultimate betrayal to Manchester United fans but what if Manchester United don't want him? Then as a player you've got to do what's best for you," he said.

The clause in Rashford's contract does allow him to talk to any Premier League club for a £40 million fee, excluding Liverpool and Manchester City, which does leave Manchester United holding the cards should the Merseyside club come calling.

Sheringham added United "should be in control" of Rashford's future given his contract and the hefty wages the club are paying a player who appeared to down tools in the final months before his loan deal to Aston Villa.

Staying out of the question?

Ironically, Manchester United are in the market for a left-sided forward that fits Rashford's profile, and Sheringham feels the club would be well served finding a solution that means he stays at the club.

"But United can try and manipulate the situation to get the best outcome for what they need. He's a United player so why not utilise that situation to get that extra forward back in the squad that Michael Carrick needs? Can they ease the situation and make it work? He's playing at a World Cup and scoring goals. He's in your squad. Make the most of it," said Sheringham.

The Treble winner added that the past is "easily forgotten" in football and if Rashford does reintegrate into Carrick's side and gets back to his best at Old Trafford, everyone will be a winner.

"If Rashford came back firing on all cylinders for Manchester United, working hard for the team at Old Trafford, then everyone is going to be happy, aren't they?" he said.

However, as stated, a reconciliation feels a long way off with INEOS happy to move on from the academy graduate who could have etched his name into the history books at the Theatre of Dreams had things panned out differently.
