Crystal Palace play their first-ever Europa League match tonight – albeit a year later than they possibly should have – when they host Polish side Lech Poznan at Selhurst Park (kick-off, 8pm).

The Conference League champions will be looking to make a fast start in Europe’s second-tier competition, but they have struggled at home this year and their opponents have been free-scoring at times. Take a look at my three best bets for the match and analysis below.

Match details

What: Crystal Palace vs Lech Poznan, Europa League

Where: Selhurst Park

When: 8pm, Thursday September 17

Watch: TNT Sports 1 and HBO Max

Key stats

Poznan won their two qualifying ties 6-0 and 9-2 on aggregate.

The Polish club have also won five of their past six European away fixtures.

Palace have conceded 11 goals in five matches under Pierre Sage.

Twelve of Palace’s previous 14 matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

Adam Wharton has been fouled exactly twice in all four of his league games this term.

Lech worth backing to cause an upset

After recording successive wins over Fulham in the Premier League and Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup, it looked as though Palace might have turned a corner under new boss Pierre Sage. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

A 3-2 defeat at home to newly promoted Ipswich Town has piled the pressure back on Sage, with the Eagles having lost three of their first four league games.

They will be hoping for some respite in Europe, but as they showed last year in the Conference League, their home games were not straightforward. Palace lost at home to AEK Larnaca in the league phase and were held to a 2-2 draw by Finnish side KuPS.

I think the hosts could be in for a difficult night against Lech Poznan. The Ekstraklasa outfit were free-scoring in the qualifying rounds, netting 15 times in four games, while conceding only twice.

Lech Poznan had won eight of their last nine in all competitions before a shock 2-1 reverse at Gornik Zabrze on Saturday, so they also need to bounce back.

While Palace have had home discomforts, with just one victory in five against top-level opposition, Lech have enjoyed playing away in Europe, winning five of their past six assignments.

They should relish tonight’s game and, given the current mood at Selhurst Park, I think it is worth taking a chance on the visiting team to earn at least a draw tonight.

I am backing Lech Poznan or draw as my first bet of the day, which is available at generous-looking odds of 9/5.

Goals usually flow at Selhurst Park

While punters may be drawn to more glamorous ties than this one, the statistics and trends suggest this should be a very entertaining game.

There have been 12 games with over 2.5 goals in Palace’s last 14 fixtures. Their three home matches this season have produced 13 goals, while they have conceded 11 in five matches under Sage.

I have already mentioned Lech’s prolific scoring record during Europa League qualifying, but their impressive record stretches back further, having scored in 15 successive away matches in Europe.

Lech have played 14 games this season in all competitions, 11 of which have featured at least three goals. Both teams have found the net in eight of those.

I am surprised that punters can back both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with Betfred, given everything we know about the sides.

This bet has landed in five of Palace’s last six home matches and it has also paid out in six of Lech’s past seven away games.

Bet builder: Spaniards to hit the target

I am rounding off my tips for tonight’s game with a four-leg bet builder, which pays out at 4.53/1 if each selection is successful.

Spaniards Yeremy Pino and Pablo Rodriguez look like good bets to have a shot on target. Pino, who was a member of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad in the summer, has had four shots for Palace in the Premier League, despite starting only two games.

Only Yannick Agnero (17) has had more shots than the 16 Poznan’s Pablo Rodriguez has managed in the Ekstraklasa this season. He scored in the 5-0 win at Klaksvik in one of the qualifying rounds.

Adam Wharton continued his trend of being fouled exactly twice in each Premier League game on Saturday, so I am sticking with the Eagles’ midfielder to keep that run going in Europe.

Finally, Radoslaw Murawski looks a strong bet to commit at least two fouls. He has been penalised 15 times in the league for Lech this term, at least five more than any of his team-mates, and is averaging 2.1 fouls per game.
