'I know exactly what he did for this club' - Schumacher on ex-skipper Santos

Ricardo Santos is unlikely to face Wanderers for his new club Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

The former Bolton skipper has yet to feature for the Owls in pre-season after agreeing a move from Swansea City and has only recently returned to full training.

Santos missed a large part of last season in the Championship with a knee injury and Owls boss Henrik Pedersen is hoping to step up his workload next week.

The 31-year-old defender made more than 200 appearances for the Whites over a five-year spell, helping them to promotion from League Two and lifted the Papa Johns Trophy in 2023 as captain.

Steven Schumacher is disappointed he never quite got to see the centre-back in his best form, with a pelvic issue sidelining Santos for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

"I am a little bit gutted," he told The Bolton News.

"I obviously coached against him a good number of times, and we always spoke about his strengths and what he was really good at, and he was a big player for this football club.

"When I got here in January he was coming through a difficult period injury-wise, I think he only maybe started one game, I think it was the one at Barnsley, so that wasn't ideal.

"But I know exactly what he did for this club, and I know he was a big character around here, so it'll be good to see him (on Saturday).

"I'm not sure whether he'll play at the weekend or not, I don't know, but hopefully he goes and does well for Sheffield Wednesday, just not when they play against us!"
