Newcastle United closing in on Pierre-Emile Hojberg, deal could cost around €15m

Newcastle United and Olympique de Marseille are close to reaching an agreement for the transfer of Denmark international midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

According to Foot Mercato, the Premier League side are now pushing to finalise a deal this week.

Magpies sporting director Ross Wilson has made Hojbjerg a primary target to reinforce the midfield following Bruno Guimaraes' move to Arsenal.

The total financial package is expected to be around €15 million, representing a low-risk, cost-effective signing.

The 'phenomenal' 31-year-old Danish midfielder spent the past two seasons in France with Marseille, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1's most effective holding midfielders.

However, OM are under financial pressure to raise capital and reduce their wage bill this summer, opening the door for Hojbjerg's departure at a reasonable fee.

For Newcastle, acquiring Hojbjerg would provide an immediate injection of Premier League experience and defensive stability.

Having made over 250 top-flight appearances for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, the Dane offers a proven profile who can immediately readapt to the intensity of English football.

With negotiations now in the final stages, the Newcastle hierarchy are working to finalise details before scheduling a medical.

If all goes to plan, Hojbjerg could join up with the squad before the weekend, adding crucial depth to St James' Park for the upcoming campaign.

Newcastle kicked off life under Matthias Jaissle with a 2-1 win over La Liga outfit Valencia at Mestalla on Sunday.
