A childhood photo of Yan Diomande wearing a homemade "Ronaldo 7" jersey has gone viral across social media, but the story behind the image is far more emotional than most fans realize. The picture resurfaced after the young footballer shared a heartfelt letter to his late sister, revealing the difficult circumstances of his childhood and the dream that kept him going.

In the now-viral photo, Diomande is wearing a counterfeit Manchester United jersey with "Ronaldo" and the number 7 handwritten across the back with a black marker. Unable to afford an official Cristiano Ronaldo shirt, the young Ivorian simply created his own.

The touching story behind the viral photo

In the emotional letter addressed to his late sister, Roxane, Diomande recalled the moment that inspired the now-famous picture.

The letter also paints a picture of his childhood in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where as many as 25 people lived in the same house. He remembered waiting until everyone had fallen asleep before quietly turning on the television to watch football, dreaming that one day he could follow in Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps.

Although people around him nicknamed him "Roberto Carlos" because of his style of play, Diomande admitted he never liked the comparison. His idol had always been Cristiano Ronaldo, and every dream he had as a child revolved around becoming a player like him.

From a fake Ronaldo shirt to Real Madrid

The story has become even more powerful because of its timing. Just as the childhood photo began circulating around the world, Real Madrid officially announced the signing of Diomande, completing one of the biggest transfers of the summer.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has signed with Los Blancos until 2033 after a sensational year with RB Leipzig and an outstanding 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he emerged as one of the tournament's breakout stars. Real Madrid reportedly agreed to a deal worth €125 million, potentially rising to €140 million with bonuses, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history.

His arrival also marks José Mourinho's sixth signing since taking charge, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries and Álex Espí as part of Madrid's ambitious squad rebuild. The club believes Diomande's pace, dribbling ability and versatility on either wing will add another dimension to an attack already featuring stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Endrick.
