Romano Issues Update After Tottenham Target Savinho Misses Training Today

Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Savinho missed Manchester City training today, with Fabrizio Romano issuing an update on the Brazil international on Thursday afternoon.

Tottenham have been trailing the Brazil international for more than 12 months and, having failed to bring him to north London last summer, they are determined to get their man this time around.

Savinho is clearly a club target, but a transfer has got the green light from manager Roberto De Zerbi too, as he looks to add at least two new attackers to his squad before the September 1 transfer deadline.

The 22-year-old was absent from City's open training session on Thursday, with the club revealing that he missed out due to illness.

Romano has just confirmed via his X account that the South American has also made it known to City again this week that he wants to leave the club to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Romano has claimed in recent weeks that there is a 'very good chance' of the winger joining Spurs, but any deal could depend on City landing a replacement for him first, much the same as the situation with their other top target, Cody Gakpo at Liverpool.

A claim from a top Tottenham source on X in the last 24 hours says that Tottenham's move for Savinho is expected to come to a positive conclusion in the next week, with a deal expected to go through at around the £70m mark.

Are Tottenham Overpaying for Savinho?

Tottenham have shown that they aren't afraid to spend big as they look to back De Zerbi and rise back up the Premier League table following successive 17th-placed finishes, but they will also want to ensure they aren't overpaying for players.

Spurs certainly blew their rivals out of the water to sign Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali from West Ham United and Newcastle United respectively for a combined fee of £185m, but there should be question marks over paying £70m for Savinho, even in the current climate.

City signed the Brazilian from Girona for £30m two years ago, and since then he has made 84 appearances for the 8-time Premier League champions.

His numbers since then aren't incredible, and he failed to hold down a regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola, with new City boss Enzo Maresca seemingly ready to let him leave.

Savinho clearly has something about him having been at City, but he does need to show more at Tottenham to show he is worth £70m.

Perhaps regular football under a manager who clearly rates him could be the difference, but right now you have to say that Spurs are overpaying for a player, despite the fact they have wanted him for more than a year.
