Row your boat

Manchester United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe is at the centre of a storm after Olympic icon Sir Ben Ainslie claimed he was hit with a “burn your house down” threat.

Ainslie claims he was told Ratcliffe would come after him unless he handed over his team’s assets and intellectual property, according to High Court documents.

The alleged threat was apparently delivered by Jean-Claude Blanc and Rob Nevin, the chief executive and chairman of Ineos Sport.

It allegedly occurred in Ainslie’s Barcelona office back in October 2024, mere hours before Britain’s most successful sailor was due to try to make history in the America’s Cup against New Zealand.

Ratcliffe, whose worth is valued at more than £13.5bn, backed Ainslie’s Athena Racing team by pumping millions into the project to try and create history.

The teams split last year and the United co-owner filed legal action in April to force Ainslie to hand back the £180m boat they built together for the 2024 America’s Cup campaign.

Ugarte attracts Prem interest

Crystal Palace and Everton are among the clubs interested in Manchester United ace Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after a hapless spell following his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

United are believed to value the 25-year-old at around £25million ahead of the summer transfer window.

Both Palace and the Toffees keen to strengthen their midfield.

Andre Onana return

Andre Onana will return to Manchester United for pre-season training.

Onana spent last season out on loan at Trabzonspor but will return to Old Trafford after the World Cup.

The goalkeeper’s future has been the subject of speculation, but he will be in United’s books before a decision is made.

The Cameroon international would likely play second fiddle to Senne Lammens if he stayed, with Altay Bayindir heading out.

Mateus Fernandes latest

West Ham sources have told SunSport that Manchester United have had no direct contact with the relegated club over Mateus Fernandes.

In fact, the Hammers have heard from no teams regarding a deal for Fernandes.

The midfielder has impressed and is expected to depart the East Londoners.

West Ham need to raise more than £100million in sales after their drop to the Championship.

And the club value the Portugal international at a minimum of £80m.

Domestic transfers can be made between Premier League and EFL clubs when the window opens on June 15.

United eye Tchouameni

Manchester United are said to still be interested in Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni this summer.

After two fallouts with team-mate Federico Valverde in training, the squad has been fractured and one may need to leave.

The Frenchman would be highly rated across Europe, but with Man Utd needing to replace Casemiro, it could be a perfect fit.

Tchouameni, 26, is reportedly worth around £60million.

Red Devils eyeing trio of left-backs

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing three different left-back options this summer, with the club looking to bolster their defensive options ahead of a return to the Champions League.

One is Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, who Director of Football Jason Wilcox is a huge admirer of – the Englishman is said to be worth around £70million.

However, they are also in talks for two other options in Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown.

Both players are 22 and are the right fit that United chiefs are after.

Rafael Leao wants PL move

AC Milan wantaway star Rafael Leao has reportedly made it clear he would love a move to the Premier League this summer, with Arsenal and Manchester United rumoured to be interested in the Portuguese winger.

He is said to be available for £43million, and could bolster the attacking options of the Gunners’ left wing, who are looking for improvements on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Elsewhere in Europe, Turkish giants Galatasaray are prepared to make an offer for Leao.

Premier League title prediction

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada reckons the club is in a “good place” to win the Premier League within two years.

When Ineos took over football operations, Berrada revealed the desire to win United’s 21st league title by 2028, the 150th anniversary of the club’s founding.

Ideally, we do it next season, and if not, then the following season. We’re in a good place.

We’ve seen some really good progress on the pitch this season, and we’re going to continue building on that.

We’re going to continue investing in different areas of the club.

We want to be financially sustainable and introduce commercial innovation.

Omar Berrada,

Ed’s just the start

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada will not be held to ransom by market forces or agents when moving for Premier League players.

Berrada confirmed United are set to mirror last season’s transfer plans by signing a mix of experience and youth.

Man Utd spent over £200million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens last summer– and it reaped big rewards.

The Red Devils are just emerging from the issues created by spending huge sums on transfers and wages for the likes of Casemiro, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek.

The Manchester giants are eyeing up at least five new signings this summer.

Atalanta ace Ederson is set to become the club’s first arrival after they agreed a £38m deal earlier this week.

Asked about what approach United would take to the transfer window this summer, Berrada believes the club have a clear plan.

The template of what we did last summer will be replicated. We have a clear plan.

I do think what we saw last season is a good way forward for us, which is we want a mix of experience and youth.

We want a mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also players who are doing very well outside the Premier League.

Omar Berrada,

Steve Holland effect

Manchester United assistant manager Steve Holland has rebuilt his reputation as part of manager Michael Carrick’s brains trust.

Old Trafford insiders label Holland the “perfect No2” – his reserved, quiet demeanor ensures his words carry real weight when he speaks.

The 56-year-old has spent most of the season sitting with Carrick at academy games, even encouraging senior players to walk over to the Carrington pitches to watch the Under-18s after training.

The experienced coach was instrumental in advising the Man Utd boss to shorten training sessions, switching the focus to intensity instead.

Holland commands immense respect from United stars, frequently working at Carrington on staff rest days.

Instead of sitting back and celebrating the Red Devils’ 3-2 win at Arsenal in January, he spent the journey home reviewing footage of the Emirates victory with Carrick to plan for the next game against Fulham.

Holland vs White bust-up revisited

Manchester United assistant manager Steve Holland was at the centre of a major World Cup storm three years ago when Arsenal ace Ben White walked out on England.

The bust-up left a rift so deep that a furious White packed his bags, fled Qatar, and turned his back on the national set-up.

It began with a tactical pop-quiz. After grilling Kyle Walker on Manchester City’s set-up, Holland asked White a point-blank question about Arsenal.

When White came up blank, Holland sharply claimed the defender wasn’t “sufficiently interested” in football in front of the entire squad.

It was one of a number of issues that led to White leaving the squad for personal reasons.

The Arsenal full-back would not return to England until Holland left, receiving a shock call-up from Thomas Tuchel in March before suffering a knee injury.

Holiday after England snub

Manchester United ace Harry Maguire has been getting over his World Cup heartache with a glamorous holiday in Barbados.

Maguire was joined by his wife Fern as they appeared to have a date night during the holiday.

The centre-back made the flight over the Atlantic Ocean but stopped short of the tournament venues by heading to the tropical Caribbean island instead.

The couple was pictured posing for a photo in a romantic setting with the ocean behind them.

Another snap showed the pair relaxing with the 33-year-old in a loose-fitting shirt and Fern in a bikini top and skirt.

Maguire was also treated to some time on the golf course with former England team-mate Jordan Pickford.

Pickford took a break from football before linking up with the Three Lions for their pre-World Cup training camp in Florida.

Ederson plot twist

Despite Ederson’s £39million deal being finalised with Atalanta, the Brazilian midfielder’s transfer will only be fully processed in early July.

This is because Ederson is joining from an overseas club.

Italy’s transfer system and the international clearing systems (FIFA’s ITC) will not process his registration to the English FA until the standard international benchmark of July 1.

Ederson has agreed to become a United player, but he cannot legally be registered on their squad list until July.

Car crash revelation

Diogo Dalot survived a near-fatal car crash as a child – and his very next thought was getting straight to football training.

The Manchester United full-back has opened up about his journey ahead of his second World Cup with Portugal.

Dalot, then aged 12, was hitching a lift to Porto training from his friend’s dad when the car flipped and landed on its roof on the motorway.

Writing for The Players’ Tribune, Dalot recalled the terrifying moment and the crazy conversation he had when his dad arrived at the crash scene.

Before I even know what’s happening, the world is upside down. There’s broken glass everywhere. I’m stuck in the back seat.

I take off my seatbelt. Climb out the open back window. Run away as fast as I can. Smoke is rising from the car, but we all get out alive.

When my parents turn up, my mother is crying. Then I see my father, and you know the first thing I tell him?

‘Dad, come on, you have to take me’.

He says, ‘Yes, son. We’re going to the hospital. Don’t worry, you’re going to be OK’.

I say, ‘The hospital? What are you talking about? Take me to Porto’.

He looks at me, trying to understand. ‘The hospital in Porto?’

‘No. If I miss training, I won’t be in the squad tomorrow’.

Even close to death, I was thinking about football. My mother was hysterical, and my team-mate and his father went back to Braga, but my father drove me to Porto.

Mateus Fernandes latest

In fact, the Hammers has heard from no teams regarding a deal for Fernandes.

And the club value the Portugal international at a minimum of £80m.

Domestic transfers can be made between Premier League and EFL clubs when the window opens on June 15.

Lewis Hall price

Manchester United will need to pay £70million to sign Newcastle ace Lewis Hall this summer.

The Magpies will not need to sell as many players this summer after Anthony Gordon’s £70m departure to Barcelona.

United are interested in replacing Luke Shaw with the 21-year-old, who controversially missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

Man Utd Director of Football Jason Wilcox is said to be a big admirer of the left-back.

Iliman Ndiaye latest

Everton star Iliman Ndiaye has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

But reports suggest Ndiaye has not asked to leave the Toffees despite being linked with United.

The forward has reportedly turned down new contract offers, with release clauses in his deal causing some tension.

But Everton are not under pressure to sell, although a big offer could test their stance, with David Moyes keen to keep the Senegal international.
