Harry Amass is in first-team training at Carrington and the left-back is clearly keen to make an impression at Man Utd this summer. There might have been a few eyebrows raised when Harry Amass returned to Carrington on Thursday. The young left-back has clearly spent a fair bit of the summer in the gym and he has done plenty of work to make sure he is ready to take what might turn out to be a major opportunity for him.Amass has bulked up this summer and looks ready to thrive in pre-season. Luke Shaw is United's only senior left-back and although they could sign someone in that position, the academy graduate might be sensing a chance to force his way into Michael Carrick's plans.Erik ten Hag took a 17-year-old Amass on tour in 2024 and was impressed with his performances, but felt he was too small to become a member of the first-team squad and despite the youngster knocking on the door, he never made a first-team appearance under the Dutchman.Amass eventually got chances under Ruben Amorim and he's now made seven appearances for United, totalling 325 minutes. While he can't do anything about his height, he can do something about his physicality and his approach to this summer shows he has done just that. But for an unfortunately timed hamstring injury, Amass might be further down the line towards first-team football at United than he currently is. He spent the first half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and was excellent in difficult circumstances. His spell at Hillsborough was character-building, given the turmoil the club was in, but in January the decision was made to return to United and join Norwich City on loan, with the intention of playing for a club battling for promotion to the Premier League.Instead, he played just 15 minutes for the Canaries at the end of January before picking up a hamstring injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. That is a lost six months at a crucial time, given there is a vacancy at left-back at Old Trafford and that Shaw himself is out of contract at the end of the season. United have looked at potential left-backs this summer, including Lewis Hall at Newcastle.Amass will get opportunities in pre-season, however, starting with next weekend's fixture against Wrexham in Helsinki, then the clash with Rosenborg in Trondheim. He will know that if he can perform this summer and catch the eye in training, he could end up in the squad next season. With United back in the Champions League, Carrick will need more depth in the squad and Amass can provide that. Patrick Dorgu is another option at left-back, but he has thrived on the wing under Carrick, so this summer feels like an opportunity for the younger man, and it looks like one he is determined to take.
