Ten Doeschate seeks India exit; Gambhir yet to sign off on the request

Ryan ten Doeschate is contemplating moving on from the Indian team. If he receives the go-ahead from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and head coach Gautam Gambhir, this could be his final week with the Indian team. More specifically, July 19 - the day of the third ODI against England - could mark his last day in the Indian dressing room.

Cricbuzz understands that he has already informed the BCCI of his desire to move on and has requested the board to relieve him. There are, it is learnt, multiple reasons behind his decision to step away, none of which has anything to do with job dissatisfaction, sources insist. What can be said with certainty, however, is that if the separation eventually happens - as appears most likely - it will be an amicable parting. The end will be cordial with mutual consent.

Ten Doeschate, a former Netherlands international, joined the Indian team exactly two years ago, and it is understood that he has now completed his initial contract with the BCCI. In fact, his tenure is believed to have ended around this time - July 12-14. With the Indian team currently on tour in England, he may seek to be relieved immediately after the third and final ODI at Lord's.

It is learnt that he wants to move on for purely personal reasons. With three young sons needing his attention - particularly as his wife is working - he wants to devote more time to his family, which is based in London. Given the extensive travel commitments associated with the India job, ten Doeschate is believed to be looking for a role that demands less travel and allows him to spend more time with his family.

Besides, as an assistant coach, he may not necessarily have complete clarity about his role. His core area of expertise is fielding, but with T Dilip already serving as the fielding coach with the Indian, ten Doeschate's contribution in that area may have been somewhat limited.

Otherwise known as a likeable person, ten Doeschate is believed to share a close personal and professional rapport with Gambhir, who has never shied away from praising him. In fact, it was Gambhir who recommended his name to the BCCI after taking over as India's head coach a couple of years ago.

Gambhir, of course, relies heavily on ten Doeschate on several fronts. There remains a possibility that the head coach could veto his resignation. While it may seem unlikely, one can never be certain, especially given the Indian team's struggles in recent times.

Cricbuzz has refrained from contacting ten Doeschate as the Indian team is in the middle of an international fixgture. This website has, however, reached out to the BCCI.
