An MP said “common sense has prevailed” as he welcomed the announcement that York City’s promotion parade will go ahead.

Luke Charters said it was “fantastic news” that the Minstermen’s open top bus celebration in the city will go ahead on Thursday evening (May 7).

The York Outer MP had been among those to call for the parade, after plans were initially turned down by North Yorkshire Police on safety grounds.

“After such a brilliant season and a historic return to the Football League, it’s absolutely right that the players, staff and supporters get the chance to celebrate together properly,” he said.

“Since our promotion, I’ve been working alongside the club and local partners to help make sure this celebration could happen, and I’m really pleased that everyone has pulled together to deliver a real moment for the city.

"York has been behind this team every step of the way this season, and tomorrow is going to be a special occasion.

“I’ll be there and I’m really looking forward to celebrating with supporters across York.”

Hundreds of people are expected to show their support for York City during the parade on Thursday evening.

It will follow a route along Museum Street, Station Road, Rougier Street, George Hudson Street and Clifford Street.

City of York Council has urged people to plan ahead, with road closures in place across the parade route.

A council spokesperson said it is “strongly advised” that people do not drive into the city, asking fans to walk to the city centre and aim to watch the parade “as close to home as possible”.

But parking will still be available at car parks around the city, with St George’s Field Car Park available for the Eye of York. Castle Car Park will only be open for blue badge holders, the council said.

The council spokesperson said the use of flares, pyrotechnics, or anything similar is “strictly prohibited as they poses risk of injury and serious health risks”.

Drones are also not allowed on the parade route and any unauthorised drones on the route will be removed, they said.
