Even with these doubts, his reputation as a coach makes him the standout name atop the shortlist, particularly given England's alarming form of seven defeats in their last nine Test matches.

The ECB has already begun reaching out to prospective candidates, hoping to have McCullum's successor confirmed well before the opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19.

However, given the importance of getting this decision right ahead of next summer's Ashes series, the board appears willing to prioritise a thorough selection process over speed. Dark horses for the England Test coaching role

Stephen Fleming

Among the candidates capable of springing a surprise, Stephen Fleming stands out significantly. The former New Zealand captain was actually approached four years ago before McCullum eventually got the job, but turned it down at the time due to his long-term commitment to Chennai Super Kings. Justin Langer
