'Irankunda is a box of tricks'

Australia 0-0 Egypt

Chris Sutton

Former England forward on BBC Radio 5 Live at Dallas Stadium

It's about who is going to be the most daring in Dallas.

Nestory Irankunda is a really talented forward, will he fire for Australia?

He is a box of tricks and he has that pace to get in behind that backline of Egypt.

'This is going the distance'

Australia v Egypt (19:00 BST)

I know everyone will be talking about Egypt's Mohamed Salah but I don't see him getting on the scoresheet here - or anyone else for that matter.

Both teams love to defend and to play on the counter-attack, and neither of them will be opening up. This is going the distance.

Sutton's prediction: 0-0 after extra time. Egypt to win on penalties.

'Enormous boost to have Salah fit'

Australia v Egypt (19:00 BST)

Chris Sutton

Former England forward on BBC Radio 5 Live at Dallas Stadium

It's an enormous boost, Egypt look for that star quality up front with Mo Salah and Omar Marmoush.

I don't think anybody fancies Egypt or Australia to win the World Cup, both of the teams set up in a defensively minded way.

Egypt will be delighted [to have Salah fit] and it will be a greater concern for the Australian backline.

A 92-year wait ends

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

This is Egypt's second ever World Cup knock-out match, and their first since the 1934 edition - when the whole competition was played in a straight elimination format.

They lost 4-2 to Hungary in the first round. Now nearly a century later Egypt will aim to right that wrong in their first ever competitive meeting with Australia.

Double World Cup joy for Australia?

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

There is a chance this could be an exceptionally good weekend in global sport for Australia.

As well as the Socceroos playing today, the women's cricket team face England on Sunday in their World Cup final at Lord's - which you will also be able to follow on the BBC.

You'll be able to hear Waltzing Matilda all over the globe if there's double Aussie success in the coming days.

If you are reading in Australia having got up/stayed up for this one, we salute you.

Supporters have also gathered in Federation Square, in the centre of Melbourne, to watch on the big screen. Having watched Australia v Denmark in the 2023 Women's World Cup there, I can tell you from experience that the atmosphere will be cracking.

The final Asian representatives are... Australia?!

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

If the expanded World Cup format turned out to be an opportunity for Africa, the opposite applies to Asia.

Just two of the nine qualifiers from the Asian confederation made it through the groups, and one of them - Japan - have since also departed.

That leaves only Australia - who play in the AFC region despite not being an Asian nation - as continental representatives.

If Australia win here, they would be the first AFC team to win a World Cup knock-out match since South Korea on home soil in 2002.

Can Africa's World Cup success continue?

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, not one of Africa's five teams made it out of the group stage. Fast forward to 2026 and of the 10 African teams, all but one made it through the group stage.

However so far only Morocco have made it to the round of 16, with Ivory Coast, South Africa, Algeria, DR Congo and Senegal all exiting in recent days.

The final three African teams in the round of 32 play today, led by Egypt here.

Only six times have African teams won a World Cup knock-out game - Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010, then Morocco three times across 2022 and 2026.

It would mean a lot to African football if Egypt can add to that tally today.

TV cameras have shown us Hollywood actor Samuel L Jackson pitch side, decked out in official gear and a big smile on his face.

Often at this tournament celebrities have brought out the match ball pre-game - perhaps the Pulp Fiction star will be the one doing the honours today.

How important is Salah to Egypt?

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan does have a few key players to lean on, and numerous squad members have chipped in so far to the country's best ever World Cup campaign.

All five of Egypt’s goals have been scored by different players so far.

But Mohamed Salah remains the attacking focal point, especially in terms of creativity. Only Leandro Trossard created more chances in the group stage than Salah’s 11.

The former Liverpool forward is closing in on a major landmark too. If he scores today it will be his 69th goal for Egypt, a total that will take him level with his current head coach at the summit of his nation’s all-time top scorer charts.

Adding in the immense star power Salah carries, there is no doubting his central importance to Egypt's hopes.

Is Salah playing for a move?

Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)

Egypt star Mo Salah's last few months at Liverpool were not easy as his relationship with boss Arne Slot seemed to disintegrate.

Both have now left Anfield. It is widely expected Salah will move to the Saudi Pro League once the World Cup is over, but for now his focus is solely on leading Egypt in the knockout stages.
