Andoni Iraola has already put his Liverpool squad on notice that peak physical condition is a non-negotiable requirement to feature under him. The newly-appointed Reds manager succeeded Arne Slot earlier this month on a two-year contract, becoming only the second Spanish boss in the club's illustrious history.

The 43-year-old's appointment has generated considerable excitement, with his markedly contrasting approach to his predecessor proving a major talking point. A firm advocate of high-intensity, aggressive pressing football, Iraola tasted considerable success with his methods at Bournemouth, guiding the south coast club into European competition for the very first time.

The Spaniard has outlined his footballing philosophy - which some pundits have likened to Jurgen Klopp's approach to the game - on numerous occasions, highlighting how crucial athleticism is in executing his system to perfection.

In elaborating on the demands his players must meet in order to "break" the opposition, Iraola has made abundantly clear to his Liverpool squad the level of fitness required to earn a place in his starting XI. "It is key because we try to play with a fast rhythm," he told The Guardian in 2024.

"We don't want the games to stop and you don't have time to recover. I always say, 'You have to ask for the ball when you're tired.' If you are waiting to rest before asking again for the ball or making the run into space, everyone can do this.

"But you are a Premier League player and if you are tired, this is the moment you have to push the opposition, when they are also tired, and try to break them. To do that you have to be at your best physically."

Iraola's philosophy should prove a welcome change for Liverpool supporters, with many fans having criticised the sluggish nature of the team's performances this season under Slot. The then-reigning Premier League champions were outworked in the bulk of their league fixtures.

The most damning evidence of their insufficient work rate came in their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last November, when they covered nine kilometres less ground than their opponents.

The new Liverpool manager has already begun reshaping the squad in his vision, with the Reds having confirmed the capture of Spain winger Victor Munoz. The club activated his release clause, valued just under £35m, after edging ahead of Newcastle United in the pursuit of the 22-year-old.
