THE Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA) has suspended relegation for the 2025-2026 HMA Vigne Cup First League season and announced the expansion of the competition from eight to 10 teams for the 2026-2027 season. The decisions were made by the HMCA Board, which convened recently following Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) introduction of a June 20, 2026 cut-off date for the Vigne Cup 1st League to facilitate preparations for the men’s and women’s National Premier Leagues. The cut-off date shortened the current season and disrupted the fixture programme, leaving the association to determine the most appropriate course of action for its affiliated clubs.Following extensive deliberations, the board unanimously resolved that no team would be relegated at the conclusion of the current season, citing circumstances beyond the control of the HMCA and its clubs. The board further unanimously approved the addition of two slots to the first league, bringing the total to 10 teams. The association said the expansion would create additional opportunities for clubs and players, strengthen competition within the province and further enhance the development pathway from club cricket to provincial and national representation.Royal Cricket Club, who finished as log standings winners of the 2025-2026 HMCA Vigne Cup 2nd League season, and Glenshire Cricket Club, who were the leading side in the same competition, have been promoted to the Vigne Cup 1st League for the 2026-2027 season.HMCA chairperson Tafadzwa Madoro congratulated the two promoted clubs and expressed optimism about the league's expanded format.HMCA suspends relegation, expands Vigne Cup 1st League to 10“On behalf of the HMCA board, I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Royal Cricket Club and Glenshire Cricket Club on their promotion to the Vigne Cup 1st League and we look forward to their contribution to an expanded and even more competitive league next season,” Madoro said in statement. The HMCA said the decisions were made in the best interests of the game, with the objective of ensuring fairness to all participating clubs while promoting the continued growth, competitiveness and sustainability of cricket within the province.Meanwhile, HMCA Vigne Cup First League matches continue this morning with Alex Cricket Club taking on Rangers at Old Georgians Sports Club.Takashinga 1 date Gladiators at Old Hararians Sports Club while Uhuru Cricket Club are at home at Takashinga Cricket Club against Rainbow.Tomorrow, Takashinga 2 hosts Old Hararians at Takashinga.Postponed week 8 matches conclude the season next weekend.
