Upon clinching the Hangzhou crown, Medvedev also entered an elite conversation alongside American tennis legend John McEnroe.

Daniil Medvedev has now won 22 hard-court ATP Tour titles

Medvedev has always played at his very best when competing on hard-courts, as evidenced by his ATP trophy haul.

All but two of his ATP Tour titles have come on hard courts – with the exception being his 2023 Italian Open triumph on clay.

In securing his 22nd hard-court title, Medvedev has now overtaken former world number one Andy Roddick, who won 21 hard-court titles before retiring.

If Medvedev advances past Carreno Busta, he will play either Jan-Lennard Struff or Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round.

Jannik Sinner is the defending China Open champion. The Italian will not defend his title as he is still recovering from a knee injury.
