England edge All Whites 1-0 in pre-Football World Cup international friendly

The All Whites ended their Football World Cup preparation with a 1-0 loss to England in a warm-up game in Tampa, Florida.

The third game between the sides, and first since 1991, would have left the All Whites with plenty to like about what they can do against higher-ranked opposition, even if they are still yet to beat the Three Lions.

New Zealand's defence was strong against the world number four side but they continued to be unable to find a way to create enough goal-scoring opportunities.

England captain Harry Kane broke the deadlock just before half-time getting the ball into the bottom right of Max Crocombe's goal.

It was Kane's last act before being substituted for the second half as England changed their entire starting 11 at the break.

Unlike the first warm-up game against Haiti on Wednesday where All Whites coach Darren Bazeley made mass changes for the second half, against England just one change was made at the break with Alex Rufer replacing Joe Bell in the midfield as Bell works his way back from injury.

New Zealand made three more changes just after the hour mark, two more at the 77th minute, and the final players came on for the last seven minutes as Bazeley tried different combinations with an eye to what he could put on the park during the World Cup.

The All Whites had two attempts on goal in the first half and struggled to get into the England box in the second period as they ended their two-match World Cup preparation without scoring a goal.

Sunday's game was played in 33C conditions and hydration breaks were taken in both in halves, in line with the timings that will be used in every World Cup game.

There will be a lot more on the line when the All Whites next take the field in Los Angeles against Iran in the World Cup opener on 16 June.
